Wood Stove Parts

While there are many different manufacturers of wood stoves, today it’s easier than ever to find all of the wood stove parts you might need – even years after you’ve purchased your stove. Even when you might not know the exact model or even the manufacturer of your stove, you can often find a parts supplier who will help you find the exact part you need.

There are a few common replacement parts for wood stoves that can be found at most suppliers. Below are some of the more common categories.

Stove Mica or Isenglass – Wood stoves can’t use regular tempered glass. Due to the high heat, special glass is required. If you’ve cracked the glass in the door of your wood stove, you don’t necessarily have to buy a manufacturer’s replacement part. As long as you know the size and thickness, after market glass will work.

Door Gasket – Most wood stove manufacturers use the same type of gasket material in their doors. Often you can replace it once it’s worn with after market gasket material to save a bit of money.

Blower Thermostat – While each stove manufacturer might use their own thermostats, often these parts are somewhat interchangeable. All thermostats work on the same principle, so again you might be able to use an after market part instead of ordering a replacement from the factory.

Blowers and Fans – While each stove might have a specific fan installed, the stove manufacturers usually just install a stock blower. Often these blower motors can be ordered online from other suppliers at a significant savings.

Chimney and Flue Parts – These are normally very standardized parts. In almost every case there is no reason to order replacement flue parts from the manufacturer. There are dozens of reputable suppliers of quality chimney replacement parts. If your stove pipe is damaged, a simple search online should let you find exactly what you’re looking for.

There are a few exceptions to this, however. In the case of cast-iron or stove-specific replacement parts, you’ll need to make sure that you either order directly from the manufacturer or that you know for certain that the replacement part will work. While handles, lifters, and even fire dogs are somewhat generic, each stove has slightly different dimensions, so you’ll need to know what you need before you order.

In addition, any new cast iron stove part must be fully seasoned before use. This seasoning drives all moisture out of the metal so that it’s safe to fully heat. If you fail to take this step, the metal might shatter once it’s heated. For this reason, it’s normal that cast iron parts are sold with no warranty. Please note that the seasoning of these parts is completely different than seasoning of cast iron cookware.

To season a cast iron stove part do one of the following:

Light 5 small “kindling fires” in your wood stove, allowing the stove to cool completely between fires.

or

Place the part in an oven set at 325 degrees. Increase the temperature every 30 minutes by 25 degrees until you oven is at the maximum temperature for 30 minutes. Let the oven and the part come back to room temperature slowly (overnight).

For most normal wood stove parts replacement needs, you should be able to find suppliers online who can provide the exact part you need at a price you can afford.
